Panaji is the capital of Goa, it is also known as Panjim among the localities. Panaji means the land that does not flood. The Portuguese called the city Panjim and after liberation, its name changed to Panaji. Panaji is also spelled as different names in different languages, like Panjim in English, Ponnji in Konkani and Pongim in Portuguese. It is the third biggest city in the state after Vasco da Gama and Margao and it is the biggest city in North Goa with a population of 114,405.
... Panaji is a well-known tourist place and is popular for its prominent churches, which are there in this city. The two important beaches nearby the city are Miramar and Dona Paula. The town has preserved its historical buildings and at the same time it has modern structures, one can see historic churches and Fontainhas, the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The most popular festival in the city is the first day of New Year or the Fontainhas celebration.
