Overview
Pondicherry is a union territory of India, excluding Chandannagar. It formed out of four former French India regions, namely Pondichéry, Karaikal, Mahé, and Yangon. The area changed its official name to Puducherry on 20 September 2006, historically known as Pondicherry. Pondicherry is also known as Puducherry. It is the largest district in the southern part of the Indian Peninsula, with which it shares most of its culture and language, and is surrounded by the state of Tamil Nadu. The Union Territory of Pondicherry lies in the municipality of Pondicherry can be traced to the second century AD in the earliest recorded history.
